NEWS, EVENTS AND INSPIRATION FROM THE WORLD OF MIYABI!
Newsletter 5. 5. 2025
Dear guests, dear friends!
It’s here! Miyabi has a birthday! 30th! We’re celebrating! May 5, 1995 was the day we opened!
Mr. Zacpal, who has been at Miyabi for as long as Miyabi has existed, has created a video of various events and is looking forward to us all marveling at how young we were. I was thinking about what stuck in my memory the most and it was Day One, the day when the grand opening took place and yet so much was still unfinished. There was only an hour left until the opening, to which distinguished guests including the Japanese ambassador were invited, and the back rooms had not yet been fitted with tatami mats. A panic situation arose because the tatami mats were locked in storage and our Japanese guests had the keys and they were in town to tour Prague. It was Golden Week and my Japanese husband and his Japanese colleagues traveled from Japan to enjoy Prague. Finally, the gentlemen returned and immediately there was a chaotic rush. We all grabbed one piece of tatami and carried it to the place, but we couldn’t manage to put the tatami together so that it fit. The tatami was custom-made and the individual pieces has signs on their back with numbers and the Japanese characters East, West, North, South. Puzzle! Here? Not there… The tatami fit between the walls just three minutes before the Miyabi doors opened. The guests were already waiting outside. And there were a lot of them!
They say that chaos is the basis of creation, and I believe that this tatami incident gave us the foundation to be able to cope with other challenging situations that we have of course encountered during our thirty years of operation. Glory – Miyabi still exists! And we are still passionate about Miyabi’s vision – it is to present and pass on the best of Japan. I wish we could keep Miyabi for at least another ten years! But for this we will need you, our dear guests, just as we have needed you until now and maybe even more. Thank you!

In Japan, in the countryside above family estates in May, Koinobori fabric carp flutter, and similar Koinobori fluttered from the balcony above Miyabi thirty years ago. Although they got tangled in the fence railings and the Prague air darkened their colors, we still had them there for several years because we drew strength from them. Carps symbolize the courage and strength to swim over obstacles and overcome the cascades of the river flow to get as high as possible. That’s what we wanted to be and of course we still want to be.
Today, May 5th, like every year, we have our samurai doll in armor displayed at the Miyabi entrance. That’s because it is May 5th and it is Boys’ Day. Tango no Sekku. In today’s Japan, this holiday has become Children’s Day – it is probably believed that the virtues of samurai are a role model not only for boys, but also for girls today. Everyone. For the Tango no Sekku holiday, Kashiwa mochi (mochi mass wrapped in oak leaves) is prepared and the typical flower arranged is irises – that’s why we have irises in vases at Miyabi today. It’s just the way it should be. Irises are symbolic of boys, but girls like irises too. We all like them! Irises are beautiful and they are blooming right now!
Lots of other flowers are blooming now – daisies, forget-me-nots, and soon poppies too… Trees and bushes are blooming. What beauty, what energy! Nice frangrance everywhere. Bees are buzzing from flower to flowers. So, this is the best time to take our Miyabi family obento, created just for this period, and celebrate with us! Our anniversary and all your anniversaries. You can go sit in the park with the obento or take it with you on a trip to countryside. Order HERE. We also have boxes with wagashi sweets ready. The pieces are artistically created from fine shiroan material in the shape of a butterfly or a spring bird, and all of these goodies will add joy to your days full of duties!
If you would like to focus on tea experiences, we invite you to Miyabi for a tea event on Saturday, May 10th from 1:00 PM. The new harvest is starting and Martin Labudík and his wife Satoko have prepared an afternoon for tea lovers in the Zen house. Make a reservation for this tasting HERE. You can also find the program there. It lasts for several hours. Enjoy!
We will have other wonderful activities in the Zen house in May. The very next day, May 11th from 3:00 PM, we will have a Sunday afternoon with kimonos, free entrance. Veronika Balson has prepared a lecture for us about silk and Karolína Suková about wafuku as a hobby. She will tell you about the courage and skill of putting on kimono according to your own aesthetics and yet according to Japanese rules. You can bring your kimono, obi and komono with you and share their beauty. Finally, if any of you want, we will help you put on your kimono. That evening from 7:00 PM there is a performance Izena no Kai dance group from the Okinawa Islands at the nearby ABC theater and you can go dressed in your kimono – your experience will be multiplied! You can buy a theatre ticket HERE.
On May 20th from 6:00 PM, we have prepared the first Sake Omakase evening for you with the prominent Czech sommelier of Japanese sake Dagmar Kadlecová, and this event will also be in the Zen house. I will be there too. Hurry up with your reservation, because a maximum of 12 guests can fit at the horigotatsu table. You will be able to taste 9 types of sake and to make your experience as comprehensive as possible, we will also add small portions of food. It is Omakase, so each sake will be a surprise for you. The only thing you will know is the price of the evening and we have set it at 2.500 CZK per person with a deposit of 1.250 CZK, which you can pay HERE.

The next day, Wednesday, May 21st, the Zen House will welcome you guests again. It is International Tea Day and it is tempting to invite people to Miyabi for tea. I have been thinking for a long time that I should organize an Ochakai in the Zen House, a tea ceremony event in several seki, when wagashi and matcha are served and I will start on that internationally designated day. The experience costs 400 CZK and please pay in advance on our e-shop. 1st seki from 4:00 PM HERE, 2nd seki from 5:30 PM HERE and 3rd seki from 7:00 PM HERE. All sessions (seki) are only for 6 people.
Many guests ask whether we will have wagyuu days again and if so, when. We have set them for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 23-25. We will prepare interesting dishes for you from wagyu from Japan and from Mr. Müller from his farm near Pardubice. You will be able to compare. There will certainly be great steaks from Jára Štěpánek and nigiri sushi from our Japanese master Mr. Saito.
And please sign one more day in May in your calendar. It is May 27 and you will not like to miss this program. Okinawan artist Riko Sugama is coming to Prague again and she again offered a chamber performance in our Zen house, this time with her three Japanese artist friends. The program will include dancing, music and a talk about Japanese Noh masks. The experience costs 450 CZK including wagashi and tea and must be paid HERE. Capacity is 16 seats and the performance starts at 6pm.
As you can see, the May program is full of celebrations, full of events. We are celebrating and to celebrate better to do it actively and with passion. When I opened Miyabi thirty years ago, I wanted to introduce the treasures of Japanese culture to my guests, from food, drink and dining, to the art of the tea ceremony and from the beauty of Japanese objects to dressing. I am happy that Miyabi is now richer with our Zen house and its garden and that I can share with you in this beautiful environment everything that comes to me. Enjoy Japan! Nichi Nichi kore Kou Nichi! May every day be your best beloved day!
I look forward to seeing you soon!
Your Miyabi Darja
